Today, environmental issues play a significant role in the work of the Southern Railway, as a high standard of living and health of the population is possible only if the quality of the environment is maintained. On the railway, consumer attitudes to the environment have long been replaced by an understanding of the need for innovative technologies in the field of ecology.
On the highway, in accordance with Article 11 of the Law of Ukraine " Railway Transport", provide an environmental protection. Work on the environmental protection and rational use of natural resources by separate subdivisions of the railway is carried out in accordance with environmental legislation, state, departmental and other documents.
Environmental protection measures on the railway are aimed at improving the overall environmental condition by reducing emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere, hydrosphere and land resources.
There is a reduction in emissions from diesel locomotives due to the electrification of railway sections (transition from diesel to electric traction).
Within the framework of protection and rational use of water resources there is a maintenance and repair of facilities for treatment of industrial and domestic wastewater and return water, repair, treatment, audit of sewerage systems, maintenance of sewerage networks and facilities, repair of primary treatment facilities, creation and repair of fences zones of sanitary protection of water intakes, laboratory control, etc.
Ecological control over production processes and the condition of industrial zones is carried out in each subdivision of the railway, the activity of which can theoretically lead to the deterioration of the environment.
Regarding the protection and rational use of land, the main work is carried out on the maintenance of drainage structures, landslides, cleaning of areas and tracks from petroleum products. In addition, the rational use and storage of industrial waste, including their processing by modern waste Kharkiv-Pasazhyrskyi. Integrated management, sorting of solid waste with the collection of secondary raw materials and incineration of the residue provide maximum economic and environmental efficiency. The five-stage emission treatment system, catalytic heating and lime treatment of the waste processing complex of Lyubotyn station completely neutralize hazardous compounds formed during waste incineration. The MPC-300 waste processing complex at the Kharkiv-Pasazhyrskyi railway station also uses a similar technology.
To reduce environmental pollution when washing cars, a car wash complex was built in Kharkiv a few years ago. One of the main methods of reducing environmental pollution with this technology of washing cars is the introduction of local treatment plants and the use of circulating water supply, which minimizes the amount of harmful emissions.
In the track management at performance of track works the RM - 80 car which provides ballasting of a track and clearing of crushed stone in volume of 900 cubic meters per kilometer of track is applied. This allows obtaining ecological and economic effect due to the reduction of natural mineral resources, i.e. graveling.
The use of modern passenger cars of domestic and foreign production (with vacuum toilets, electric heating and LED lighting) has reduced environmental pollution from passenger traffic.
Recently, a project of a vacuum sewage pumping station with the arrangement of treatment facilities was introduced on the territory of the Kharkiv car section №1. This facility is designed for pumping liquid waste from - under the car tanks of environmentally friendly toilets of passenger cars with their subsequent processing and treatment of wastewater to the level allowed for discharge into the city sewer network.
